Confidentiality
The rules of confidentiality for counselors are very different from those of teachers and/or other educational professionals. Confidentiality between the counselor and student is important to maintain a trusting relationship. Students are told that what they share with their school counselor is 'confidential' unless the counselor believes sharing the information to be in the best interest of the student (to meet the academic, physical, and personal-social needs of the student). Students are also informed confidentiality is breeched if there is a known or suspected threat to the wellbeing of the student and/or others.
